Foot Pain Causes & Treatments

Many patients come to our office complaining of foot pain. A vague symptom, foot pain can be due to many different causes. Any part of the foot can be affected including bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles, fascia, toenail beds, nerves, blood vessels, and even skin.

Our podiatrists at East Ocean will carefully evaluate your foot and lower leg to determine the cause of your pain. We will narrow down the cause by location and determine if it is due to any of these common reasons for foot pain, and begin and appropriate treatment program.

Heel Pain:

Plantar Fasciitis

Heel pain is most often caused by a condition called plantar fasciitis. This occurs when the plantar fascia, the band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes, becomes irritated or inflamed. Heel pain is usually worse in the morning and is the most common symptom.

Heel Spurs

A heel spur is an abnormal growth of bone at the bottom of the heel. It may be caused by an abnormal gait, posture or walking, ill-fitting shoes, or certain activities. Heel spurs often occur without pain, but foot pain is not abnormal. It can occur if you have plantar fasciitis, but heel spurs do not cause it. If you have flat feet or high arches you are also more likely to suffer from heel spurs.

Ball of the Foot Pain:

Pain and inflammation in the ball of the foot is called metatarsalgia. Strenuous activity or ill-fitting shoes are usually the cause.

Morton’s Neuroma

Morton’s neuroma involves the thickening of the tissue around the nerve between the bases of the toes. You may experience foot pain, odd sensations, or numbness over the ball of the foot. It is more common in women because it is sometimes the result of wearing high heels or tight shoes.

Sesamoidits causes pain in the big toe and occurs when the tendons around the big toe are injured of inflamed.

Arch Pain:

Plantar Fasciitis

Arch pain is usually caused by plantar fasciitis.

Flat Feet

Fallen arches, or flat feet, are another common cause. This occurs when the feet flatten out when you are standing or walking.

Toe Pain:

Toe pain is often caused by arthritis, including gout. Gout is an inflammatory condition that causes crystals to deposit in the joint, resulting in severe pain and swelling. The big toe is often affected by gout.

A bunion is a bony prominence that grows along the edge of the foot, near the base of the big toe. They can occur in anyone, but are often caused by ill-fitting footwear for women.

Hammer Toe

A hammertoe is caused by a joint that is bent, creating a hammer-like appearance. Tight shoes are the main cause of this condition.

Foot Pain That’s Anywhere or Everywhere

Nerve damage, also called neuropathy, is usually a symptom of diabetes. The pain may be burning, stinging, or feel like electricity. Neuropathy pain can occur anywhere in the feet.

Crush Injuries

Trauma ranging from repetitive damage to a crush injury can cause serious foot pain.

Tendonitis is the inflammation and irritation of the tendons, which are the bands that connect the muscles to bone. Tendons run along the surface of the foot, and can cause pain in many locations.
