Platelet Rich Plasma

prp-stepsPlatelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy is an innovative, minimally invasive procedure that can be used to treat many common ankle and foot injuries, including Achilles tendonitis and chronic tendinosis. When small tendon or ligament tears occur as a result of repetitive motion, the lack of natural blood supply to these areas can make it difficult for the body to repair the damage.

Traditionally, physicians have prescribed anti-inflammatory medications for patients who suffer from tendon or ligament damage; however, these medications often come with side effects, and they can only treat existing symptoms. Similarly, cortisone injections offer immediate relief, but can actually further weaken tendons and ligaments over time. Rather than simply treating the symptoms of tendonitis, PRP use the body’s natural growth factors to heal the injured connective tissue.

PRP therapy is performed by drawing a small amount of blood from the patient, then placing the blood in a centrifuge which effectively separates PRP from other blood products. After the PRP is isolated, it is injected into the area of tendon or ligament injury. At East Ocean Podiatry, this procedure can be done with the use of a local anesthesia block, and only takes about thirty minutes to complete. Because PRP therapy accelerates the body’s natural rate of healing, it can help active individuals and those with chronic conditions return to their everyday activities faster than more conservative forms of treatment.
