New York Yankees star pitcher Mashatiro Tanaka is spending the next 6 weeks on the bench as he undergoes platelet rich plasma injections for a torn elbow ligament.
After struggling with elbow pain in the series against the Cleveland Indians, Tanaka visited the Yankees’ team doctor and discovered he tore the ulna collateral ligament in his elbow. While a torn elbow ligament usually requires surgery, Tanaka and the team doctor decided to try a less invasive and non-surgical approach, Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP).
Tanaka is the second Yankees pitcher this year to choose innovative and non-surgical treatments for a sports injury. In May, CC Sabathia reportedly underwent stem cell therapy for his degenerative knee changes.
Tanaka is expected to spend at least the next 6-weeks receiving PRP injections and undergoing physical therapy for his injury. Yankees officials estimate that he will be finished with recovery and able to pitch in the play-offs later this year.
