Winning 46 gold medals, 29 silver, and 29 bronze, there’s no doubt that the U.S. Olympians made their mark on the 2012 London Olympics. Athletes often push themselves to their physical limits and beyond to reach that moment of glory, and this is especially true in this world-wide competition.
Intense training and strain often lead to injury, with foot and ankle injuries being especially common. Below are just a few of the U.S. athletes who went on to compete despite the injuries they sustained:
* World vault champion McKayla Maroney went on to help the U.S. gymnastics team bring home the gold despite an old toe fracture. She competed with a wrapped toe.
* U.S. Olympic volley ball team captain Lindsey Berg sustained an ankle injury during a game against Turkey. Ankle instability, which is almost always accompanies by a history of ankle sprains, is common among athletes. Yet this did not stop the U.S. volley ball team from taking home a silver medal.
* U.S. gymnast Jonathan Horton landed wrong after a vault and fractured two metatarsal bones and tore a ligament in his foot. Yet by adapting his training, he was able to overcome his injury and qualify to compete.
* Sam Mikulak, another U.S. gymnast, suffered from an ankle sprain during the Olympic trials which hampered his efforts. Even so, he secured a spot on the U.S. team to compete in London.
